Eskandalo Alison took the time to compose the recent newspaper coverage on our shops. Spitifre Skateshop? Really Steve from the Morning Call? At least the Express Times got it right.
2 news articles came out today about the church across the street from us and Homebase and how it’s being developed by the owners of “Melt” and “Blue” (“Rain” anyone?) and turned into a restaurant lounge with an awsome glass tower and garden terrace rooftop! Oooo! So here are some quotes from the news:
Morning Call-
”I’ve come to the conclusion that south Bethlehem is a special place,” said Dennis Benner, a Bethlehem lawyer and real estate developer who is launching the restaurant project with partner and restaurateur George Paxos. ”There’s a vibrancy down here. There’s youth down here. And that’s part of what is driving this effort.”
But Paxos said the cuisine, and therefore the interior design, is still being worked out. ”It is our goal to make a landmark restaurant and lounge in South Side Bethlehem,”
I’m hoping Asian / 60s lounge style….;)
”I know some people don’t give a hoot about history. But if we don’t preserve buildings by great architects, what is worth preserving?” resident Mary Pongracz asked.
I like that quote a lot. Our building was SAVED by the people who bought it. Huge endeavor and greatly appreciated.
The Regal Furniture store at Fourth and New streets has been converted into a sneaker and clothing store. A hair salon and a skateboard and clothing shop have opened across the street from the church. A concert venue, featuring monthly blues acts, is slated to open in a nearby building, too.
”I think this is going to be great,” Alison Leigh, owner of Eskandalo Hair, said of the new restaurant-lounge. ”It’s going to bring in higher-end clientele.”
(HOMEBASE)
Ray Gurz, manager of Spitfire (yeah, nice one MC) skateboard shop, said the new facility should bring in more business for everyone.
”It’s going to be a definite draw for us,” Gurz said.
”When we stand here and cut the ribbon, this block will have an enormous amount of vitality,” Mayor John Callahan said. ”Clearly, the South Side is continuing to grow.”
Thank you for that lovely statement Mr. Callahan! We take it as a blessing

And now the Express- Times wrote a very nice piece as well!
From church to hot spot
…and then….
Ray Gurz, general manager of Homebase Skateshop said “We always talk about making the South Side more alive. Why not spice up Fourth Street and make it somewhere hip?”
Hair by Eskandalo owner Alison Leigh moved to the street eight months ago because she fell in love with the building.
“This is the perfect location with Lehigh and all the artist types and skateboarders,” she said. “It just made sense we’d be here.”
That so toally sounds like me…
