Fully Flaccid Premiere this Sunday

Since the Bethlehem Skateplaza opened up we’ve been getting to know a whole lot of skaters from all over the tri-state area. A lot of these wandering shredders I’d consider homies now because of how often we run into each other- either at the plaza or out on the streets. Sometimes they appear in our local videos and sometimes we appear in theirs. Skateboarding is so friendly.

Jake Todd and the “Fully Flaccid” crew are perfect examples of that so we’re going to throw an in-store premier at Homebase on Sunday (get your Mother’s Day stuff done early!) at 7pm. I’m sure the Matt Militano, Giorgio Villone, Kevin Liedtke, Anthomy Tomasetti and the rest of the crew will be in town shredding the plaza before it goes down so get out there, skate- then y’all come on back to the shop now ya’ heard.

April Saugy Session & Game of S.K.A.T.E. Week 2

We host as skatejam & BBQ at Keck Park (Saugy if you’re local) in Allentown on the last Monday of the month. On April 30th we also hosted Week 2 of the Skateplaza S.K.A.T.E. Showdown since we’re running behind our friends at The Berrics. To those still wondering why we don’t just do everything at the skateplaza- we stay true to our roots and we want to keep supporting Saugy.

We’ve been consistently holding Saugy Sessions for over 5 years now. It’s become a tradition for us at Homebase and hopefully for a lot of you who skate with us. It’s kind of a trip to look back at some of the older videos and photos to see how young some homies were when they first started coming out to Homebase events.

And it’s always good to see faces that have been around since the Hometeam days- like Lost Soul’s Ray Gurz. I don’t get to see Ray as often anymore since he’s now working at Double Decker Records in Allentown but he’s always in the streets with the Lost Soul crew paving their own way through the skate industry. Don’t Hassle Me, I’m Local: Jibril Perry

“When it comes to some of the younger generation of skateboarders from Easton, Jibril always comes to mind. I first met him by my Aunt’s house in Easton where I noticed him skating and immediately thought about how he reminded me of myself-skating in the street and just having fun learning tricks. We would cross paths every so often being skateboarders in the Lehigh Valley, and I would always say whats up to him. Long story short, I have seen him around for a few years now and he has done nothing but improved, on the board and as a person. He still hasn’t beat me in a game of s.k.a.t.e. though!!” (Disclaimer: He may or may not have beat me in a game of skate, and I may or may not be afraid to play him again.)

So for those who may not know you, how old are you, where are you from, and how long have you been skating?

I am 17 years old, im for Easton,PA and I have been skating for about 6 years.

Do you remember what it was about skateboarding that first got you into it?

My friends from school all skated and I wanted to because it looked like they had so much fun, so I saved up my money to get a world industries flame boy complete. Even though I got into skating because of my friends for the first three years I skated by myself.

I grew up skating in Easton too, and I always felt like we had a really strong (though pretty small) scene. How would you describe the Easton skateboarding scene as it is in 2012?

Its weird now because everyone is spread out. Most of the people I grew up skating with have gotten into other things, and either rarely skate or completely stopped skating. For the people that do still skate in Easton they live in like Forks or Palmer and I usually have to drive to go skate with them.

Skating in Easton used to be a pretty hassle-free deal. I remember hours spent at the courthouse and Riverside Park without ever worrying about getting kicked out. Is it still that way, or has the city clamped down a bit in recent years?

It depends on where you skate at. Pretty much anything besides Riverside is good, even though that probably was the best spot in Easton until the city capped the new ledges.

So what are the hot spots in Easton now?

The hot spot now would have to be the area around the lipkins ledge. In that area you have the Larry Holmes manny pad, the parking garage, the street gap and the post office.

The two-stair ledge at the old Lipkin’s furniture building is notoriously hard to skate. What is that best trick you’ve ever seen go down on that thing?

The best trick I have done on the Lipkins ledge was probably a back lip like 2 years ago. Other than that I am completely against the spot.

My friends and I used to run in to a lot of really “interesting” people skating downtown late at night. Have you ever seen anything crazy or gotten into any weird situations down there?

Last week me and my friends saw a drunk man harassing this hispanic lady. The man was telling her that she had a “Cake” and that it was fat.

I keep hearing talk about a skatepark that may be in the works in the Easton area. Do you know of anything that might be going on with that?

Yeah there should be a demo coming up within the next month or so to fundraise for the skatepark at lowerhacketts.

Besides skateboarding, is there anything else that you’re really in to?

Yeah besides skateboarding, I wrestle alot. This year I wrestled on Easton’s Varsity as a 182 pounder. It was a very good experience, I was able to go to places like Nevada and Hershey. I got into it about 2 years

ago and have been keeping up ever since. It’s fun and it gives me a similar excitement when I learn something new like in skateboarding.

Oh, wow. Do you ever find it difficult to balance a pretty strenuous school and wrestling schedule and still have time to skateboard?

Its not difficult at all. Since wrestlings a winter sport and I dont dont skate as much during the winter it kinda works out.

Saugy Session & Game of S.K.A.T.E. on Monday

Closing out April with our monthly Skatejam & BBQ at Saugy- now sponsored by the good people at DVS- this Monday night. We’ll be out there from 5-8pm skateboarding, grilling hot dogs and having a good ol’ time so be sure you come out too.

We’re also going to continue the next round of the Skateplaza S.K.A.T.E. Showdown as well. Typically, the matches are held on the 1st & 3rd Mondays of the month at the plaza but why not break the rules?

March Monday Saugy Session & upcoming April HB events

After some 70-80 degree days already this Spring, the high 40 degree temps we had felt like we were back in the dead of Winter again. So thanks to everyone who came out- and hung out- for the skate jam, mini BBQ and mini contest at Keck Park in Allentown- AKA Saugy if you’re local. (Edit by Matt Pepe. )

With Dave Hill, his lovely girlfriend Nicole and our newest employee, Beto working the grill, we raised just enough to buy a skateplaza benefit brick through our mini-BBQ and soda sales. Every bit counts so thank you for giving.

Congrats to Ben Taylor who won the GIANT Game of S.K.A.T.E. for a free spot on the Skateplaza Benefit S.K.A.T.E. Showdown. Speaking of, we have filled the 2012 Game of S.K.A.T.E. bracket and will be posting it up this week. We’ll play the first 2 Games of S.K.A.T.E. at the Bethlehem Skateplaza on April 16th!

Mishka Skate Welcomes John Shanahan

Homebase’s newest team rider, John Shanahan has been on a footage tear lately and companies are starting to take notice. Mishka is a Brooklyn based streetwear brand that keeps Lil’ John dressed fresh. They design clothing inspired by our childhood- cartoons, sci-fi, horror movies, hip-hop, metal, graf and comics. They recently posted up a “Welcome to the team” clip edited by filmer and editor for the upcoming Homebase video, Trip Brown on their Bloglin.

The Champ is Here: Catching up with Aaron Haas

Dave Hill caught up with Aaron Haas, the 2011 Saugy S.K.A.T.E. Showdown reigning champ to talk about how life has changed since he took the title. He’s already entered in the 2012 tournament to defend his title. The 2012 tournament is now being held at the Bethlehem Skateplaza every 1st and 3rd Monday of the month. Anyone willing to take on Aaron’s deep bag of flip tricks can still enter by making their $20 donation to the Bethlehem Skateplaza. Contact Us up for details. The 2012 Skateplaza S.K.A.T.E. Tournament will begin once all 32 spots on the bracket are filled up. Hope this interview doesn’t discourage you for entering.

HB: How old are you, and where are you from?
AH: 22, Kunkletown Pennsylvania

HB: So being that you’re from all the way up there, how did you first come to hear about the Saugy Showdown?

AH: I heard about it on Facebook

HB: Are you willing to give away any of your secrets? What was your training regimen like for last year’s showdown? Hours skating flatground alone? Jumping rope? Did you hire a coach?
AH: I usually skate flatground a lot, but for the contest I did practice more than usual. I probably skate flatground a few hours a day and no coaches or anything like that, just played a lot of games of skate with my friends for practice.

HB: How has your life changed since winning the Showdown? I bet the girls have got your phone ringing nonstop.
AH: Its been about the same.

HB: Do you plan on entering the showdown again this year?
AH: Yeah

HB: What’s one flatground trick that always gives you trouble? Or are you not willing to divulge that information to your opponents?

AH: Switch 360 flips

HB: If you could play a Game of S.K.A.T.E. against anyone in the world, who would it be?
AH: Paul Rodriguez

HB: So while we’re on the hypothetical questions, who would you least like to have to face in this year’s showdown?
AH: If i had to choose someone it would probably be Johnathan Shanahan or my brother. Every time I play one of them the games go on forever and they do tricks I’m not to good at but it does give me practice because its better to play people that do tricks your not used to so you can get good at them.

Case of the Mondays: Ben Taylor vs. Busenitz

Ben Taylor is one of Homebase’s newest employees and an up & coming shop rider. He’s recently been getting shop flow from the good folks at Adidas Skateboarding too so who better to introduce you to Dennis Busenitz’s Pro Model shoe than him?

Ben is a solid all-around skater who can handle himself on a manuel pad, ledges, a Game of S.K.A.T.E. and down gaps so he needs something that gives him good board feel but also protects his heals.

Since he’s shop flow, he only gets a small package every month from Adidas. Luckily, the Busenitz are durable. So far, he’s hasn’t had any problems making to his next pair even though he’s at the plaza on a daily basis.
